Prohibited Areas and Whaling Station Access

Access to Husvik, Stromness, Leith and Prince Olav whaling stations (and this includes jetties) is strictly prohibited due to the extremely hazardous condition of the structures and presence of significant quantities of asbestos. To protect the public from injury or exposure to airborne asbestos, 200m safety exclusion zones are in place around these sites and it is an offence to enter without a permit.

Information about the Prohibited Areas and relevant legislation can found here.

Any group or individual with a particularly special reason to enter one of the closed sites, should contact GSGSSI directly and apply for permission. To enter a Prohibited Area it is necessary to obtain a Prohibited Areas permit. Entry without a permit is an offence. An application form may be obtained through the following link.
