Earth Day – Delivering Protect Sustain Inspire – The Government’s Delivery Agenda

(Press Release – 22 April 2022)

In 2021 the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands launched Protect Sustain Inspire (PSI)– a values-driven approach to the stewardship of the Territories. Today, on Earth Day, we publish our delivery agenda for that vision.

Organised into 5 themes of:

  • Environmental Resilience
  • Biosecurity and Non-Native Species
  • Culture and Heritage
  • Science; and
  • Global/Regional Responsibility

The delivery agenda sets out clear and accountable milestones for the implementation of the vision in PSI, reflecting the theme for Earth Day “Invest in Our Planet”.

In doing so we accept our responsibility to conserve the unique biodiversity, landscape and heritage of the Territories. These islands, which have previously been ravaged by human exploitation of natural resources along with invasive species, and which now face the potential impacts of climate change.

The work we have already undertaken, including the establishment of the Marine Protected Area for the whole of the EEZ, the eradication of non-native mammals, and the ongoing management of invasive plants, provides an excellent foundation for our ambition. As before, we will build on the expansive network of those passionate about SGSSI – its biodiversity, its culture, and its heritage – who have contributed so much to conservation and preservation of these islands, to help deliver this agenda.

Will are proud to say that, on Earth Day, the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, and all those who are passionate about this wilderness ecosystem, continue to “Invest in our Planet.”
